All other camp activities (as listed on the website, such as 'Random Hug Patrol') are interactive but *not* located in camp. We do not have 24h interactivity, and yes, we are asking for Esplanade space. I understand this is against general Burning Man policy. They made an exception for this in 2006, so I figured I would ask. ** Please see the comments field below ** Project Features: ---------------- ('Amplified Sound',) Project Interactivity: --------------------- ('entertaining', 'games', 'performance', 'scheduled events', 'structures to climb or play on/with', 'primarily night time') Camp Layout Plan: ---------------- http://ultrastuntdangeracademy.com/Map/ Number Of Campmates: ------------------- 6 to 10 Number and Type of Vehicles: --------------------------- 1 40' support bus (running on waste vegetable oil) 4-5 cars Physical Description: -------------------- 1 bus (40'x10') 1 shade structure (30'x20') a few tents and 4-5 cars Arrival Date: ------------ Thursday: 08.27.2009 Early Arrival Setup Crew Count: ------------------------------ 4 Requested Location 1st choice.: ------------------------------ Esplanade/Portal Requested Location, 1st Choice Dimensions: ----------------------------------------- 50x50 Requested Location, 2nd choice.: ------------------------------- No preference Requested Location, 3rd choice.: ------------------------------- No preference Sound Amplification: ------------------- yes Sound Amplification Details: --------------------------- A single PA system for amplifying the boxing announcers voice during Rock'Em Sock'Em Robot matches Stage: ----- no Big-Name Performers: ------------------- no You would prefer not to camp near...: ------------------------------------ ('Any stages or loud sound installations.',) Comments: -------- I recognize that we are asking for Esplanade space for only supporting one project (Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots). All of our other projects are located outside of camp and can occur regardless of Esplanade space. To make the Robots work, we only need a few simple things: 1) A small camp on the Esplanade (50'x50'). The Robots will be on the playa in front of town. 2) A single trench dug across the Esplanade to run the robot power lines 3) Not located near loud/live music camps (otherwise fight announcer will be unable to be heard). These are requirements for running the robots. If you think these are too much, we have *no* problem with that, and *please* deny the theme camp application. Please do *not* just simply give us a smaller space or a different location or place us near a loud camp, because we will not be able to run the robots. Again, if these requirements are worth it to BRC to have the robots back, we'd love to bring them, but we've had situations in the past where these were not met and it became a logistical nightmare for our town and for BRC to try to make the robots work. I do not intend to run through that again under any circumstance. If BRC absolutely requires 24h interactivity of some sort, we have considered opening up our shade structure to the public as a 24h chill space, please let us know if this is needed to get the application accepted. I don't mean to sound like a prima donna by requiring Esplanade space, but I have run the Robots for 3 years on the Playa now, and I have learned that they can easily gather a large (and excited) crown on the open Playa near the Esplanade, but they are incapable of hitting critical mass on one of the inner streets. The Robots are *highly* interactive, they require 4 brave souls for every battle, and battles generally last a minute or so. This means that we offer the opportunity to interact directly with the robots to many people, but if we are not on the Esplanade, then we are unable to find enough brave participants to keep the robots running and hence we lose the crowd. If you have *any* questions about these needs, feel free to call or email and I will be happy to discuss. Alternative Power: ----------------- The support bus that brings up the robots and houses and runs all the repair tools is a diesel pusher that has been converted to run on waste vegetable oil, so it is almost carbon neutral. Our theme camp also buys carbon offsets to help cover the carbon footprint. Generators: ---------- 10kw fully enclosed diesel generator built into the bus. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 30 May 2009 01:52:37 -0700 THANKS FOR SUBMITTING YOUR QUESTIONNAIRE Once we receive your questionnaire, project description and drawing, someone from the ARTery will contact you to talk about your project. Suddenly, as a mirage, two robots loom before you. It's Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots, from your youth, but this time they're big enough to knock *your* block off. You climb into the boxing ring and climb into the Blue Bomber, and suddenly you've become an 8 foot tall robot fighting machine. Your trusty companion grabs hold of the steering controls outside the ring, while your two combatants gear up in the Red Rocker. The hot arena lights pound down on you while the crowd cheers you on. You hear the bell ring, and the fight is on! Associated With Theme Camp?: --------------------------- yes Theme Camp Association: ---------------------- Ultra Stunt Danger Academy Physical Description of Art Installation: ---------------------------------------- A life size boxing ring contains two life-sized "Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots" - the children's toy from the 60s. The robots are a highly participatory activity, one participant "steers" the robot while the other participant climbs into the robot shell and punches. They take on another team of two in death-defying robot combat! There are assistants to help load the participants into the robots as well as a boisterous and hyperbolic announcer. The bright lights and loud clanging are all part of the show. Combats last only a minute or two, and it only takes moments to load in new participants, so the installation is able to "service" large numbers of participants every night that it runs. Project Footprint: ----------------- 30x30x10 Scaffolding or structure over 15 feet high : ------------------------------------------- no Holes dug in the playa? : ------------------------ no Interference with nearby art?: ----------------------------- no Quiet Area Requirement: ---------------------- no Dark Area Requirement: --------------------- no If you are requiring a dark and/or quiet environment, how much space surrounding your artwork would you need? : -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The installation is neither loud nor quiet - but there is an announcer with a PA calling out the fights, and the robots are metal hitting metal. So the Robots cannot be installed near a loud sound installation or live music. Illumination Details: -------------------- A number of 500W spotlights are used while the project is running, and christmas lights are used to illuminate the boxing ring during off hours to protect it. Energy Requirements: ------------------- Approximately 4kWh/day. This will be powered by my vehicles large battery bank, which is replenished by a large generator (which is also used for town power needs). Recycle Materials: ----------------- The robots will return to their home in San Francisco where they will serve as butlers. Or just sit in my garage. One of the two.
